I first met Ely on the day of her baby shower – our mutual friend Dee referred her to me and while I hardly like doing events (it’s just not my favorite thing), something inside me told me to do this one… I’m *so* glad I did – everyone who attended – from her parents, to friends were awesome. So much love in that room! Her hubby had just been hired by the Miami-Dade firefighters department after being a member of the Hialeah one for a few years already – one of the first things he ever said to me was “You think I’ll look weird since I have to shave my head for the academy?” hahaha – of course my response was NO – and I was right, because a little birdie told me he kept shaving it way after he really had to keep doing it (LOL). They welcomed their first little baby earlier this year – Jax and he was such a rockstar at our session… which will be blogged soon! <3

Fun fact – I love when clients ask me about gear and technical stuff regarding cameras and lenses – which they did because they had just acquired one! So if you’re ever at our session and you want to bring your brand new camera – I’m always happy to show you how to use it! 😉

This is the evolution of a newborn photographer. Part 1 because I hope there will be many more new parts come. The photos of the babies here are most of my newborns since the start of my career. You’ll instantly see just how much it has changed with each and every new baby. This job isn’t easy folks – it is very much a labor of love for me. I work full time at a major university so all of my newborn sessions are done on the weekends. I have sacrificed many many events, trips, lunches, brunches, parties, boat days, etc for this job… and I’m not complaining! So let me give you a glimpse into what goes into being a newborn photographer…

-My car is my storage facility. Very rarely will you see my car empty – it basically always has my bean bags, blankets, backdrops, etc (please don’t try to break into my car now – I don’t leave anything of real value like my camera in there lol)

– I can rarely plan a weekend getaway anymore. Just because there is a “due date” does not mean that is when I will photograph them! Sometimes babies arrive earlier and later than expected – so I have to keep a few weekends open “just in case”..and nights before a newborn session? I rarely go out because I’m afraid I’ll be too tired the next morning for the session!

– I drive to every clients home [for now] – I wake up no later than 7 am on the day of the session (Saturdays and Sundays) to prep everything… that doesn’t include prepping the week before based on clients preferences, gender, whether there are parent shots or not etc.

– On the day of the session, I, along with an assistant usually (but not always) unload the car, set everything up in the house… while the air is off or turned up very high (as per my request)…

– it takes about 30 minutes while the baby is getting fed for me to set the bean bag, the props I’ll be using, the lighting, backdrops, white noise maker, shusher thingy, reflectors, towels, headbands, bonnets, etc.

– Then it’s hoping the clients followed my instructions of keeping the baby awake for at least two hours before I get there – and waiting for the baby to fall asleep – sometimes I let them kick it out, other times I diffuse lavender essential oil (always douse myself with it beforehand though lol),  there’s always a lot of rocking, and shushing, and caressing of the hair and forehead… and when I’m really *really* lucky – the baby is just a big sleeper and we can start right away.

– Then all of my workshop training, online training, countless YouTube and blog post research, constant newborn photography group support comes into play – posing the baby isn’t done haphazardly… it takes so much patience, understanding what they like/don’t like, and love – true true love for what you do – to do this “right”.

Fast forward to 3-4 hours later – yep – 4 hours later – and it’s time to reluctantly give the baby back (lol) and start packing up. But I’m not done! Then we have to edit, painstakingly remove little flakes from their little faces, sometimes fix the redness newborns tend to have, and if you have a jaundice baby well then… good luck with that one! 😉

It’s a beautiful job. A job I am so incredibly lucky and proud to be able to do. I truly love each and every little newborn I get to cuddle… While I’m posing and soothing during each session, I’m looking at this new little life and wonder who they will become. Will they be a doctor? A lawyer? A philanthropist? Will they be kind? Will they be good? Will they be compassionate human beings? …What will their favorite color be? Who will they become? I might never find out, but I hope I do. I love to watch them grow and become little people with their own personalities. But most of all – I hope and pray that they feel the love I have for them during my time with there. I hope they feel safe. I hope they feel warm. I hope they feel happy.

I hope they never have to worry. I know that will not always be the case because this world isn’t perfect- but I want the parents that come to me with their baby to know that I pray – to whatever God or non-God you want me to pray to – that your baby lives the most beautiful life a human can…

I hope one day this can be my Monday through Friday job… but for now, I’m OK spending my weekends with these cuties. Enjoy JMP’s evolution – I promise it will only get better from here <3

..and thank you to each and every family (newborn or not) who has trusted me with their little ones, with their visions, & with capturing moments they’ll never get back..

Let me start this off with a…. HAPPY FRIDAYYYY!!!!!! In honor of the Friday before Mother’s Day, why not show off some photographs from our JMP 2015 Mama Mini Sessions! I got to work with 7 beautiful Mama’s that weekend and teamed up with a really good friend of mine… Alessandra Rivera… she did the GORG make up and I shot the people… and by shot I totally meant “photograph” 😉 It was such a beautiful and extra special day as most mini session days are a mix of established clients and new ones! I honestly could NOT have done it without some the help of my AMAZEBALLS best friend Nikki & My helper Claudia! Also… if you don’t already know… there is a MAJOR instagram war going on on my IG right now… lol I posted one photo from each session & told errr’one that the one with the most love (comments/likes) will get a free 8×10 from their session! So… if you wanna help one of the Mama’s out… leave some LOVE for them on my IG! 😉 But for now.. enjoy the sweetness of these images!

I want to formally wish all of the Mama’s I know (and don’t know, but are currently visiting my blog) a beautiful Mother’s Day weekend… you deserve it! And if you want IN on my Mother’s Day sale… check it out here

Morning Y’all! One of my favorite type of sessions are CAKE SMASH SESSIONS! It’s so fun to watch these littles dig in to a cake! Sometimes they go in HARD (like this little dude) and other times they gag (one coming up soon that did just that! stay tuned!). I have been photographing Lorenzo since BEFORE he was born! I’ve known Krystal since high school and we have always had the same “humor”. I always looked forward to our session so we could catch up, talk about “the struggle” and laugh at funny things on social media… Rene, her husband is also awesome! Such a cool dude that is really into the whole photography behind the scenes thing asking me questions here and there! I have absolutely loved watching an old friend become a mother and watching her little grow into a gorgeous boy! They call him “Little Baht Baht” and he may or may not also have his own instagram account! hah! 😉 If you want to reminisce on this little cutie when he was a tin baby, you can check out some of the posts here for his newborn photos and here for the maternity session!

Good Morning Beauties! It’s been sooo crazy at JMP lately…. I’m so luck to be so busy! My first newborn of the year was this little peanut; Baby L! I photographed her mom, dad & big bro a few months before while she was still waiting to come out… I’ve known her Pops since high school and I’m *so* lucky I get to watch old friends grow up, get married and start families of their own… to look back and remember the dumb crap we used to do as teenagers and to be able to look at the present and realize that we are officially ::gulp: adults… is so crazy to me! Crazy beautiful that is! Baby L was one of JMP’s ROCKSTAR babies… only saw her eyes *once* and that was for a quick feeding in between set ups… it really isn’t a “coincidence” that she was such a rockstar… when parents follow my instructions perfectly, and are super laid back and *trust* me during the session… the amalgamation of all of those factors makes for a perfect, yummy, sleepy newborn! <3
